8 Tips for Touring an Assisted Living Community

If you or an older adult you love are considering moving to a senior living community, you’ve probably already discovered just how many choices there are. It’s easy to get a little overwhelmed by it all. Feeling confident that you are making the best choice means visiting each community you are considering and asking the right questions.

From services and amenities to pricing and fees, these tips will help you make the most of your visit so you can make an informed decision.

8 Tips for Touring a Senior Living Community

Tip #1: Pay close attention to interpersonal relationships

One sign you are visiting a top quality senior living community is if you see positive interactions between the residents of the community and staff. Do residents seem happy? Do staff members greet them by name? Pay close attention to verbal and non-verbal cues.

Tip #2: Is the community clean and well-maintained?

While dramatically designed lobbies are pretty to look at, it takes more than luxurious drapes and a grand piano to gauge the true quality of a community. What matters more is the cleanliness and maintenance of the entire community. Are the grounds and parking area well cared for? Is the community free from odors? Are individual resident rooms, common areas, and the dining room clean and fresh-smelling? Do you see repairs that need to be made? Keep an eye out for all of these factors while on your tour.

Tip #3: Ask about staff turnover and longevity

A true sign of a well-run community is staff longevity. While the industry is known for high turnover rates, the best senior living communities typically have staff longevity. When turnover is low, it promotes better continuity of care for residents. Staff and residents have time to get to know and trust one another.

Tip #4: What happens when your loved one needs more assistance?

As your loved one grows older, their need for support will likely increase. Make sure you find out how the community handles those types of changes. Will your family member be able to receive more care there or will they have to move again?

Tip #5: Ask detailed questions about monthly fees and entrance fees

Unfortunately, there isn’t a standard pricing structure across the senior living industry. Each senior living community has their own unique pricing system. For families, it can be a little more difficult to make sure you are comparing apples to apples when it comes to what is—and isn’t—included. Make sure to ask what additional monthly fees you should expect to pay beyond room, board, and care.

Tip #6: Review the community’s state survey results

Before you leave each community, ask to see a copy of their state survey results. Many communities keep them in a binder in the lobby or in the Executive Director’s office. Take a few minutes to review the survey and ask questions about anything you don’t understand.

Tip #7: Ask for copies of all required documents

Ask each community you are seriously considering to provide you with a copy of all documents you will be required to sign. If you aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of senior living, it might be best to seek the advice of an elder law attorney who is. They can help you review the documents and point out any causes for concern.

Tip #8: Pay attention to how the community makes you feel

As you make your way through each community, ask yourself if you can picture your senior loved one living there. Does the personality and style of the community seem to fit your loved one? If something at the community doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and keep looking.
