The community is divided into 4 homes of 20 beds each. Each with their own enclosed garden area and dining room. Two homes care for those in the beginning stages of the disease while the other two homes take care of those residents with higher acuity needs. By doing this the communities are able to plan appropriate activities and give appropriate care to each individual.
Because wandering is a concern for residents with dementia, HarborChase requires every resident to wear the Medic Alert Safe Return bracelet. The garden area is located in the center of each home and each home is shaped in a square for ample safe area for walking. Each home is secured with alarmed and coded entrances.
To properly take care of a resident it is important to take a full history. HarborChase takes this a few steps further. They not only take a medical history they work on a comprehensive social history. What did your father do for a living, when did he get married who were his play mates when he was a child? By asking all these questions the staff at HarborChase are able to arm themselves with the tools necessary to redirect and alleviate anxiety for a resident. In addition all staff members including administrative staff are required to take 60 hours of continuing education per year in care giving.
